BA(Hons) Fashion Promotion

Over recent years the BA(Hons) Fashion Promotion course at the University of Central Lancashire has gained an excellent reputation throughout the fashion industry for producing innovative, creative and professional graduates. Our graduates have procured positions with companies such as Adidas, Exposure PR, Diesel, Nike, Reebok, Microzine, Estee Lauder, The Future Laboratory, WGSN.com, Jo Malone, River Island and Sony Playstation to name a few.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The Fashion Promotion course has been running for over 16 years and was the first one of its kind in the country. We are the only fashion promotion course to have an industrial placement which gives our students a head start when entering the industry as a graduate. The course is structured over a four year period of study with a six month placement taken in the third year. The placements provide the students with vital experience for their final year’s work and future career prospects. The range of choice in work experience covers areas of trend prediction, styling, public relations, marketing, promotion, visual merchandising, fashion media and journalism. The opportunities are exciting and varied and placements have been taken both nationally and internationally.

Regular shows and exhibitions are an important aspect of the Fashion Department where the fashion courses join forces at venues such as Graduate Fashion Week, Clothes Show Live and here at the University for Arts Week. Our Fashion Promotion students have also been successful in winning prestigious awards such as Graduate Fashion Week’s Creative Fashion Marketing and Accessories awards and Student Adshel Design awards.

The positions within these companies vary from showroom assistant, graphics designer, visual merchandiser, stylist, assistant events manager to photographer’s assistant. Successful students can find themselves being employed for a year and becoming a valuable member of the team.

Year Four

Year Four encourages students to work in a self sufficient manner throughout a series of highly individual projects, both for inclusion in personal portfolios and for national and international competitions. The final project asks students to design and create a promotional campaign of their choice, with an in depth creative fashion marketing report to support their project.

One of the benefits of the industrial placement is that some of our students are offered jobs after graduation with the company.

We asked a few ex-students about their experience of the course at Preston: Gary Aspden is Global Head of Non-Athletic Promotion at Adidas. Gary has returned to the University on several occasions as a visiting lecturer, setting “live” projects for second and fourth year students and has also employed students as part of their industrial placement. “The course gives an overview of lots of different areas within Fashion Promotion (photography, journalism, graphic design etc.) The whole academic experience (as well as the year spent working out in industry) that I gained at UCLan has proved invaluable in my role at Adidas. It’s a great course that requires a lot of self motivation from the individual”.

Jo Tutchener-Fox, Head of Communications at Estee Lauder - “The industrial placement was an excellent way of introducing me to the fashion and PR industry. It provided me with important skills and contacts that resulted in me being offered a position with a top PR agency after graduation.”
