'Untitled*
Steven Aron Williams (Fashion Promotion graduate)
7 January to 1 February 2008

In his first solo show, Steven Aron Williams presents Untitled*: a photographic installation cultivated over a period of five years. The exhibition reflects a conflict between reality and abstraction: identity is distorted, insignificance highlighted and ignorance challenged. The exhibit consists of over 200 images. Concurrent themes of architecture, the urban landscape, portraiture, music and fashion are intended to provoke introspection into the viewers’ perceptions of their surroundings.
Private view Thursday 10th January 2008.

'Utility'
Final year students have 'hit the ground running' on their return to university by creating and presenting images for 'Utility', a fashion lifestyle company based in Liverpool, who have a store in Preston's Miller Arcade.

The brief was themed round well known proverbs using products from the Utiltiy ranges. Dick Mawdsley, one of the directors of Utility, came to brief the 4th years on the company and its products and then gave feedback on the final work  that the students presented to him. Working in groups of four they had to create four images that would be part of a series using four different proverbs and as many products as they needed. The results were very creative and imaginative depicting several influences from Hitchcock's films to 'Desperate Housewives'.

Mawdsley has selected one of the images to be part of a window display, in the Preston store, which will be on show within the next few weeks. The rest of the images will be exhibited on the Fashion Floor in Victoria Building.

'Graduate up-date'
Graduate Laura Blundell is now an Interior Designer at Ikea. "For each roomset, we are given a real life story explaining who lives there, what hobbies they have, what sort of house, their salary and what the moment in time is etc. I then do rough layouts and plans with the key furniture chosen by the sales team. I decide the room set, make sure that whatever I put in the room set is functional and relates to the target person. I do lighting plans, functional plans, elevations etc. I then organise any carpentry, painting, furniture making, communication and signage with the various departments; so I'm a bit like a project manager as well as a designer".
